Orem Chiropractor Describes The Pettibon Technique
What makes the Pettibon technique different from conventional chiropractic treatment or
other methods used in the chiropractic world? The Pettibon technique offers comprehensive and active rehabilitation for its patients, based on a program focusing on the spine’s hard and soft tissues. Orem chiropractor explains that the Pettibon system is unique in its use of x-rays for both diagnosis and assessment of the progress of treatment.
While Dr. Pettibon was a student at Cleveland Chiropractic College, he found that there was no defined optimum spinal position for use as a control during treatment. During the 60s and 70s, Dr. Pettibon developed a model for the upright and ideal spine, which is used as the frame of reference for diagnosis.
The x-ray procedures assure exact diagnoses, assess progress and monitor whether treatment is effective. Under the Pettibon system, the patient undergoes an initial x-ray examination with seven views of the spine taken routinely and whenever necessary. These x-rays are used to measure impairments and are used to see how the patient responds to chiropractic care under the Pettibon technique. As treatment progresses, the initial x-rays are then compared with the x-rays during treatment in order to see whether improvements are taking shape. The Pettibon system uses seated x-rays, since abnormal spinal forms are difficult to detect until the soft tissues in the spine fall. The soft tissues hold the hard tissues or the vertebrae together, and when these no longer support the hard tissues, the spine buckles into its injured position. The seated x-rays used in the Pettibon method are useful for diagnosis, since there is an increase in stress in the spinal para-vertebral soft tissue. The seated position also eliminates the influence of leg muscle contractions during standing, which can also affect the spine’s position.
Another set of characteristics of the Pettibon technique are that its patients are not accepted for treatment by default. Only after a series of tests ensure that the technique can help the patient and a determination of how the chiropractor can provide effective care is the patient accepted for treatment. Such testing is done using the Pettibon system weights and by having the lateral cervical spine re-x-rayed. A chiropractor using the Pettibon system also needs to assess whether the postural muscles are strong enough to respond to care. In addition to the rigorous testing of patient responses before treatment, once a patient is accepted for treatment under the Pettibon system, the patient is expected to play an active role in his or her care. Instead of waiting idly in the waiting room of their chiropractor, patients perform warm-up exercises and stretch their muscles. In addition, the chiropractor trains the patients in home care for faster progress and correction.

Arthritis Doesn’t Have to Mean It’s Time to Slow Down
New Expectations and New Advice for Today’s Arthritis Sufferers
If you or someone you care about is suffering from arthritis, you should know that arthritis doesn’t have to mean an end to an active lifestyle. Prior generations may have accepted the condition as an inevitable part of aging and been given a standard prescription of bed rest and drug therapies. However, today’s health care professionals recognize that appropriate exercise and nutrition are also critical to managing arthritis effectively, and they can recommend a much wider range of treatment options. Your chiropractor can play an important role, not only in relieving pain, but also in helping patients with arthritis continue to live a more independent, active lifestyle.
Understanding Arthritis and its Lifestyle Effects
Arthritis is not really one medical condition. Rather, it’s a more general term that refers to inflammation that may affect joints and other parts of the body as a result of more than 100 “rheumatic diseases”, such as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. These disorders destroy joints, bones, muscles, cartilage and other connective tissues. While arthritis is most often seen in middle aged and older adults, it can also afflict younger people. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 22% of American adults (about 50 million people) report having been diagnosed with arthritis. Their symptoms may include pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in the joints.
While the general public is aware that arthritis is painful, fewer people recognize just how severe and widespread the debilitating effects of arthritis actually are. People with arthritis may experience difficulty with everyday tasks like buttoning shirts or opening packages and containers. They may also find that arthritis limits their mobility. This could prevent them from participating in their favorite activities or spending time with friends and family. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons issued a Bulletin in October 1999 that ranked arthritis as a more frequent cause of activity limitation than heart disease, cancer or diabetes. More than ten years later, the CDC estimates that 21 million Americans face some type of disability as a result of arthritis. These kinds of statistics suggest that strategies for managing arthritis need to address goals beyond pain relief if they are to be truly successful.
How Your Chiropractor Can Help
For many arthritis sufferers, treatment still begins with rest and medication. But if you have arthritis, a chiropractic physician can help you develop a well-rounded, long-term approach to managing your arthritis in two other very important ways:
- Designing an exercise program based on your own unique requirements. Such a program usually focuses on a combination of goals, including (1) restoring any lost range of motion in your joints, (2) improving your flexibility and endurance, and (3) increasing your muscle tone and strength. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that inactivity can make joints affected by arthritis even more painful and stiff. It can also have other negative health effects. A properly designed and supervised exercise program can reduce these risks.
- Suggesting dietary changes and/or nutritional supplements that may be effective in reducing or controlling inflammation in your joints. Some research indicates that certain foods can have a role in either increasing or suppressing the body’s natural inflammatory response. Making adjustments to your diet may reduce swelling, redness and pain related to arthritis.
Your chiropractor will help you make ongoing adjustments to both your exercise and nutrition programs based on your own progress so that you get the maximum health benefit with minimum discomfort and risk.
Communication is Key
Keep in mind that some types of physical activity and dietary supplements may actually do more harm than good depending on the specific nature of your arthritis, the joints involved and your current treatment plan. So open communication with all the members of your healthcare team—including your chiropractor, family doctor and any specialists you’re working with—is the key to achieving results safely!
Both the symptoms and underlying causes of arthritis can vary a great deal by individual, so it is important that you consult your healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and to put in place a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Flatbed Trucking Companies Helped by an Orem Chiropractor
When asked to write about my experience with flatbed trucking companies
the first thought that came to my mind was a funny story that happened
when I first moved to Utah.
I went to chiropractic school in Dallas, Texas. While going to school my wife and I lived in a small apartment in the north Dallas suburb of Addison.
Shortly after acquiring our first apartment and phone number we started receiving phone calls for “The Vette Shop.” Apparently, before we had the number a specialty Corvette shop had it.
I graduated in September of 1996. In February of 1997 we moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah to begin my career. Again, we moved into a small apartment and got a new phone number.
Surprisingly, shortly after moving in we started receiving phone calls for a trucking company. What? Didn’t we just finish this game? For their own privacy I won’t name the trucking company, but the first 10 or more phone calls we received were for ____ trucking.
After having already played the game of receiving phone calls for another business, and feeling a little sarcastic I decided to start playing along. So every time someone called asking “is this ____ Trucking?” I would say, “Yes, how can I help you?”
Surprisingly, there were several things I did help with and when there was a question I couldn’t answer and made something up like, “I don’t know, Jim will have to get back to you on that.”
It’s been more than ten years now and thankfully the trucking company calls have ended and hopefully in my own silly way, I helped a trucking company.
I am participating in a blogger campaign by Bucks2Blog for flatbed
trucking companies and was compensated. However, the views and
opinions are my own.

Whiplash Prevention in Orem Utah
I’m seeing a fair number of people right now who have been in car accidents
- so I figure this is an appropriate topic.
I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t like the term whiplash because the word seems to mean different things to different people. So, in all honesty the title should be car accident injuries.Because there are so many groups interested in car accidents (auto makers, insurance companies, lawyers, doctors, researchers, etc.) there is quite a bit known about the injuries suffered by those in car accidents.
If you have been in a car accident you’ll understand some of the things I’ll talk about today from your personal experience. Other things that research has uncovered isn’t widely known or understood. These are the things I want to bring to light for you today. But before we do that let’s go over a two things you should do to protect yourself if you’re ever in a car accident.
Wear your seat belt.

It’s no secret that wearing a seat belt will save your life in a car accident. A seat belt may increase injury to your neck but the alternative is far worse.
Your headrest should reach the middle of your head. Injury to the neck happens because the seat belt locks down the shoulders and hips so at impact the neck is thrown forward and backward. Having the headrest up prevents the head from being thrown backward. If it’s set below the center of your head when the head goes back it will actually go over the top of the headrest and the headrest will actually contribute to greater injury. Research suggests that those with properly positioned head rests will have 40% fewer instances of neck pain than those with poorly placed headrests.
Go to www.iihs.org/ratings/default.aspx to see how your car’s headrest compares.
The greatest myth in regards to those involved in car accidents is the idea that car damage equals severity of injury. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FALSE. In fact, some of the worst injuries occur at 10 mph or less. The reason for this is magnification of acceleration. For example an eight-mile per hour rear end collision of two vehicles of the same mass produces a 2g (gravity) acceleration of the vehicle and a 5g acceleration of the occupants head. In a 15 mile per hour collision, the struck vehicle will accelerate to 10g; and consequently, the head of the occupant would be accelerated to 20-25g. Since g is the acceleration of gravity (32 feet/sec2), one can understand that even low speed accidents can cause significant traumas to the neck.
In comparison an astronaut will experience about 3g’s in the space shuttle at take off.
Suffice it to say that the factors that limit or minimize the damage to the vehicle are the same factors that result in greater damage to the people in the car.
Arthur Croft is a renowned researcher in the field of motor vehicle accidents and he has developed diagnosis and treatment parameters that are the standard for all of us who deal with these conditions. He and his team of researchers discovered that there are primarily four things that determine severity of injury and what kind of outcome you can expect. Those are range of motion, nerve injury, ligament injury and disc injury / broken bone.
It’s important to point out that pain is NOT one of the criteria because pain is personal, private experience. What is pain to you may not be to me and vice versa. I’ve seen loads of people who had significant injury and little pain.
As far as range of motion goes you should be able to touch your ear to your shoulder when bending side to side. When twisting to each side you should be able to go where your chin is parallel with yoru shoulder. Going forward your chin should touch your chest and going backwards you should be able to go where your face is parallel to the ceiling.
If you are unable to do these movements or unable to do them without pain or tightness you may have a car accident injury. Assessing nerve, ligament & disc injury is something that must be done be a professional. If you don’t mind me saying, I’ve got over 150 hours of postgraduate training in the diagnosis and treatment of car accident injuries. So, if you or someone you know has been involved in a car accident I can help. If you have questions or concerns you can contact me via email DrNed@AskDrNed.com or you can schedule a complimentary phone consultation and I will personally answer any questions and point you in the right direction based on your situation.

Orem Chiropractor Describes High-Fructose Corn Syrup And Health
High fructose corn syrup is a popular ingredient in sodas, fruit flavored drinks and most
processed foods. It has become a staple alternative to cane sugar in many foods and beverages, but is it safe? There has been much controversy and debate over the health effects from long-term usage of high-fructose corn syrup. So far, research has yielded mixed results about its adverse consequences.
High consumption of added sugar in any form can lead to numerous health problems, including weight gain, dental cavities, poor nutrition and increased risks of heart attacks. While the health concerns of excess sugar consumption may seem obvious, what about the specific case of high-fructose corn syrup? Should we go out of our way to exclude it from our diet, even in moderate consumption?
High-fructose corn syrup and cane sugar are not biochemically identical – cane sugar is a naturally occurring ingredient, whereas high-fructose corn syrup is an industrial product, and is processed differently by the body than naturally occurring sugar [1]. Sometimes high-fructose corn syrup is produced from genetically modified corn [2].
A study at Princeton University [3] found that rats from two test groups, one that consumed high-fructose corn syrup and another standard table sugar, yielded different results in the rats’ obesity — even with the same caloric intake. The group of rats that consumed high-fructose corn syrup experienced abnormal weight gain – particularly in the abdominal region – and also elevated triglyceride levels. Along with high quantities of HDL, otherwise known as bad cholesterol, high triglyceride levels can cause arterial blockage and may increase the risk of heart disease, hypertension and even strokes.
Consumption of high-fructose corn syrup increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes [4]. An increased risk of diabetes was observed from the metabolic profile in the study of rats that were given sugar-sweetened beverages, exhibiting impaired glucose and insulin homeostasis.
Long-term liver damage has been cited as a side effect to consuming high-fructose corn syrup [5]. This is particularly risky to individuals who live a sedentary lifestyle. Excess consumption can also result in a fatty liver [6].
One indirect health concern pertaining to high-fructose corn syrup is the contamination of mercury [7]. Mercury cell chlor-alkali products are used in the manufacturing of high-fructose corn syrup, which may leave a trace of the toxic heavy metal in its products, which can be up to 0.5micrograms/g of corn syrup. When you consider the average consumption of corn syrup as being around 50g per day, this could lead to a dangerous build up of the heavy metal in the body’s system.

Orem Chiropractor Discusses How To Take Control of Chronic Childhood Ear Infections

- Chiropractic or Drugs for Ear Infections?
It’s 2 am and the crying has only gotten progressively worse across the past hour. You are pacing the downstairs hallway trying anything to soothe your inconsolable 10-month old so that your 5 and 8 year old kids can get some sleep upstairs. Your plan is to call the doctor’s office the moment they open – seven hours from now!
Although your infant cannot tell you what is wrong, your intuition says it is another middle ear infection. The statistics would suggest that your hunch is probably right. Earaches are the #1 reason for visits to the pediatrician’s office. As a parent, that probably comes as no surprise. But, you may be surprised to learn that both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academy of Family Physicians recommend a “watchful waiting” or “wait and see” approach to acute ear infections. Research published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association[1] demonstrated that there was no difference in fever, otalgia (pain) or number of future visits between kids that were given an antibiotic prescription and those that were not. As it turns out, antibiotics only outperform the body’s own immune system in a handful of cases.
At the same time, numerous studies of manipulative therapies including chiropractic care have shown remarkable results without the side effects of antibiotics. A groundbreaking 1997 study[2] of 332 kids ages 27 days to 5 years indicted a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustment and the resolution of otitis media (the technical term for a middle ear ache). Just to highlight one finding – there were 104 kids in the group classified as having ‘chronic’ otitis media. This group of kids got 5 chiropractic adjustments each. Across the next six months the recurrence rate among this group was only 16%!
Let’s put that data into more human terms. That means that 84% of these kids classified as having chronic ear infections went six months without having another one after just 5 adjustments. A full half year devoid of screaming in the middle of the night, lost sleep and anguish of watching your child suffer for 84% of the parents.
The prior study published in a chiropractic journal spurred further research into the uses of chiropractic care for acute and chronic ear infections. The critical questions was – how would chiropractic fare head-to-head with standard pediatric care? A 2003 study[3] published in a pediatric medicine journal comparing children receiving manipulative therapy and those receiving standard pediatric care, found that those who received manipulative therapy had fewer episodes of Acute Otitis Media (AOM), fewer surgical procedures and had higher rates of normal tympanograms.
This amazing news for parents has been validated and confirmed numerous times since then. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) even maintains a webpage of all the published research studies done on children’s ear infections and the role of chiropractic care in treatment and prevention. The last time I looked there where 25 separate studies listed. You can view the full list at: http://icpa4kids.org/Chiropractic-Research/Ear-Infection-Otitis-Media/
All this data and research is great, but at the end of the day what matters to parents is getting their own child out of pain and on a path to a success in school, sports and life without the constant interruption of ear infections. Don’t spend another sleepless night pacing the halls with a screaming toddler in your arms. Call us now and make an appointment for a consultation.
Don’t wait until another ear infection strikes. Prevention is always the better option. Besides, when your child is in pain, your anxiety level as a parent goes way up. We want you to be able to ask all your questions and get all the facts at your own pace and not feel pressured to make a decision or start treatment because your child is screaming. Of course, if your child does have current symptoms, we want to see both of you as soon as possible.

Orem Chiropractor Discusses The Anti Inflammatory Diet
As your Orem Chiropractor I’ll be the first to admit I like food and I like to eat.
Remember though, the foods we eat are nothing more than fuel for our body. With that in mind, if you put bad fuel into your car how does it work? Not so well. If you put bad fuel into your body how does your body work? You get the idea.
There are more ideas on what constitues a healthy diet than I care to even think about. Because of that fact many people ask “what should I eat? What should I NOT eat? What supplements should I take?
What should you eat?
All fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry, meats (grass fed beef is best), eggs, organic dairy products, nuts (almonds are best), seeds, olive and coconut oils.
What Should you NOT Eat?
Sugar, flour, white rice, baked goods, pasta, caffeine, processed and/or packaged foods, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, alcohol, hydrogenated oils, and fast foods.
These foods must be avoided because they are either toxic (artificial sweeteners) or they produce inflammation. These foods are high in omega-6 fatty acids with little to no omega-3 fatty acids. An imbalance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids produces inflammation. The ideal ratio omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is a 1:1 ratio. (The average American has a 30:1 ratio). Therefore, eating these foods produces inflammation and perpetuates pain.
What Supplements Should you Take?
Essential Supplements Dosage
1. Multivitamin/Mineral Follow directions on bottle
2. Magnesium 6 mg per 2.2 lbs. of body weight
3. Fish Oil 1.5 grams of Omega-3 fats daily
4. Co Enzyme Q10 100 mg daily
5. Ginger 2 gram daily
Recommended Supplements
1. Vitamin D3 2000 IU daily or 30 minutes of sun exposure
2. Acetyl – L – Carnitine 1000 mg daily, in divided doses
3. Lipoic Acid 400 mg daily, in divided doses
A multivitamin provides the antioxidants and nutrients our bodies must have.
Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in thousands of bodily functions. Fish Oil and ginger are anti-inflammatory. Co Enzyme Q10 is involved in how we produce energy. Vitamin D stimulates the immune system. Acetyl L Carnitine and Lipoic Acid slow, or even reverse the aging process in our cells.
Smoking
Smoking decreases your oxygen intake. Adequate oxygen is essential to healing. Without it your body cannot heal completely and your brain and nervous system can not function properly. If you suffer from chronic pain and you smoke, you NEED to quit.
How Will I Feel?
If you have had a poor diet up to this point, the first 3-7 days may be rough. Most toxins are fat-soluble. That means they get stored in our fat tissue. As you give your body the proper nutrients you will start eliminating excess fat. When you eliminate fat the stored toxins are released which may lead to fatigue, headaches, mood swings, nausea, and flu like symptoms. Give your body about a week and you will begin to have more energy, your memory will improve, thinking will be clearer and your overall outlook will brighten.
If you would like to find out exactly how your diet may be affecting your pain visit the Orem Chiropractic website of R. Ned McArthur, D.C. or call 801-225-1311 to schedule a complimentary office visit.
